[Hallicrafters] FYI, and a question..

The key word is "quality". Just because it is on a CD or in some 'super' format,
does NOT equate to good audio! Check out the Bing Crosby Christmas album on CD,
note the stylus noise as the vinyl recording is copied to CD commercially! I
have heard numerous CDS that were direct copies with the stylus tracking noise
present, so it is not uncommon! Anything cheap to make a buck.
You can hear very poor quality CDS, just listen to a decent sampling and the
quality goes up and down like a flag on a pole.
Surround sound? Most people would not know they were hearing it, unless somebody
told them. For years the only media capable of surround sound was the Laser
Disk, not CDS, not TV, not FM etc. Yet people bought all sorts of equipment when
they did not even know they were not hearing surround sound, just stereo coming
out three channels; left, right and left+right!
When the hype is taken out, the residue that remains is mostly so so. I would
not worry about what this new satellite system will do to the market, as the
audio market is fueled by hype and customers for the most part are fooled into
buying what does not yield what they are led to believe it will.
It all comes down to what the user wants: quality audio or some new toy to play
with. Anyone can play a piano, but only a few can make music with one!

What will we do with our Halicrafters tube radios when HD Radio becomes the
standard?
HD AM Radio is hear, although the receivers are somewhat pricey. AM HD is
digital, fade and static free and with stereo quality equal to current FM
Stereo. FM HD will be in stereo 5.1 surround sound with CD quality and several
music formats simultaneously. Just think of the "commercial" possibilities.
However as of now no music CDs have 5.1 encoded.
With all the circuits it takes in a SX 101 just to receive SSB, one will require
an additional room in the Ham Shack to house sufficient tubes and parts to
receive HD. Or will we end up with a cell phone size appliance instead of
several communication receivers?
Will Hams permitted to transmit in Digital? Just think of how many channels
would be available on the Ham bands with Digital.
