There are 2 types of rings for those connectors. The wavery one that goes
in the groove is used only for a chassis mount or for a metal mounting
ring. The other is a coil that goes over the shield at the open end and
keeps more tension on the shield where it snaps into the slot on the
connector. It is supposed to keep the shield on when you pull on it to
unplug the connector. Good luck.
