It's perfectly normal. My SX-115 behaves the same way, and they have
essentially the same 50 Khz IF strip, although the SX-117 doesn't have as
many selectivity choices. At 5/3/2 Khz the readings are pretty close (a
meter needle width, maybe). Using the internal calibrator, tuned in the 0.5
Khz position, the 0.5 Khz position reads S-8, the 1 Khz position reads 9+20,
and the wider positions all read about S-9. The SX-101A I owned also
exhibited varying S-meter readings with bandwidth.
Consider it part of the receivers "charm". These things were never meant to
be NIST traceable :-)
