Chuck is one hundred percent correct.

Look in older Handbooks and radio texts, especially
from the 40s and before, and you will see that M does
indeed refer to "Thousand."  If the diagram calls for
a 1 M resistor that translates to a modern 1 K.  If it
calls for a one Megohm, it will say 1 Meg, not 1 M.
