Personally, for a modern radio to use for SWL etc., I like the Yaesu Mark V.
Connect it to a good speaker and a sub-woofer and you'll have a superb
listening post.  The synchronous AM detector works great and you have all
the QRM fighting tools at your disposal that you'll ever need, along with
the not-so-insignificant side benefit, of a 200 watt HF tranceiver as well.
