Paul.....
The schematic values in "M" are REALLY "K" - believe me! I can only think
that when these schematics were created that the "M" reference was to the
roman numeral "M" for 1000. The values in thousands are correct values,
your problem is elsewhere.
I've just been through this with the S-20R receiver which has the identical
circuit. If you plug all those values (in Megohms) into that circuit and
calculate current flow, you will see that it will be impossible to get a
F.S. deflection on that meter....
Good luck..

Subject: [Hallicrafters] SM 40 Meter
Have just gotten into restoring these old Boatanchors and am having a lot of
fun. Have just finished an S-38C-works great.
Recently acquired an S-40A serial # HA-99333 and an SM-40 to go with it
however there is a problem. When the meter is plugged in and the sensitivity
switch is turned on the meter pegs out to the right from it's normal
position which is to the right side of the meter.
Opened the SM 40 case and found that (according to the schematic I have)
resistor R1 is 20K-should be 24Meg, R3 is 20K-should be 20Meg, R2 (pot Halli
# 25-562) is 10K-should be 10Meg. All the guts in the meter appear to be
original. Moving wires around simply makes the meter peg out in the opposite
direction. I am going to go with the schematic values for the components
when I change them.
Would Hallicrafters change the component values so drastically? Possibly to
fit a different receiver? Any input would be appreciated.
Thanks
Paul
