I have the SX-111 and the R-48 speaker and I agree with your statement, but
nothing beats (IMHO) the sweet sound of an SX-17 (not 117), and the matching
R-12-T (12") woofer speaker combination. Especially those HiFi SSB guys.

Subject: [Hallicrafters] Nice sounding SSB Audio
Looking at the issue of audio quality from the other
end -- the receive side -- makes a difference as well.
The teeny-tinny speakers in a lot of the Ikensu rigs
don't sound that great especially when the gain is
turned up. And many of the external accessory
"banzai" speakers are merely a cheap 3x5 in a cheap
metal box.
Absolutely the sweetest sounding recovered SSB audio I
have ever heard comes from an SX-111 hooked to an R-46
speaker. I should add that the original speaker
itself was replaced by a 10-inch musical-instrument
speaker since the original Halli had been blasted
beyond repair before I got it.
No matter what rig is talking to this SX-111, it's
made to sound excellent.
