[Hallicrafters] S-53A Alignment

I have run across an alignment problem never before encountered.  This S-53A 
aligns fine on all bands except the broadcast band.

It appears to align OK at 1500 khz but below about 1100 it is dead and no 
amount of juggling of trimmers will make it tune the whole BC band.  In 
fact, it appears to want to work up into the 2 mhz range.

All parts are original, everything is as it should in the circuit be but I 
cannot make it tune on this band.  If other bands were affected I would 
suspect an IF alignment problem.  But all other bands produce excellent 
reception and good calibration.

Anyone else had a similar experience?  Anyone have an idea to put me on the 
right track, something I have missed somewhere?  This is a wierd one!!
