[Hallicrafters] SX-71 Pitch control shaft.

Hi Julian,
The CW control shaft on my SX-71 was broken too when I got the the
receiver. I removed the assembly and was able to remove the iron core
with the brass screw in it. I then drilled the screw in the core and
turned down (step-down) a matching screw and mated the two together
with some epoxy glue. The drill was small (#58 I think) and the
turning of the matching screw is delicate lathe work but not too
difficult to do. The end result fixed it like new. Good Luck.

I'm resuscitating an SX-71 that arrived in a pretty poor state
cosmetically. Electrically, from the limited tests I did, it
seems to be OK.
One problem is the CW Pitch control. When I tried to gently straighten
the shaft, it broke off ... I then
removed the whole control, and disassembled it. The shaft is basically
a screw thread with an iron core at the end, that moves in and out
of the inductor coil.
I'm wondering if I can perhaps simply break off the remaining short
copper threaded shaft, and glue a longer replacement shaft onto the
iron core piece? I imagine getting hold of a replacement knob is
going to be hard.
Thanks,
Julian
