i just received a new scam attempt; this was an exact duplicate of
a paypal payment email that you would normally receive if you sold
something; problem was, i didn't recognize the sender as someone i
was dealing with - otherwise, everything was an exact match. the
scam here was the hope that the receiver of the email would use the
link in the email to sign on to paypal, and of course your password
would be bagged. this one threw me for a loop for a few seconds; i
logged onto paypal (via my normal method) only to find that no such
transaction existed.
NEVER sign on using any link in an email; always type in the URL,
or use one bookmark that you know is good.
i'm not certain about other ISP's methods, but my AT&T email program
helps me out a lot - when i am viewing an email, if i use the VIEW,
MESSAGE SOURCE in the toolbar, many times the ISP identifies some
email senders as "misconfigured sender" or "untrusted sender", or some
other detail - this lets me know that there has been some use of a
proxy, or that the email route has been spoofed, etc. care must be
taken using this w/ free email sources, tho.
