Sounds as if the dial cord is slipping.  It may be
loose around the spindle attached to the knob, or it
may just be worn smooth.  I have seen a product made
by GC Electronics that was used for "dressing" dial
cords, similar to the way "belt dressing" is used in
automobiles; but unless you have an electronics parts
house -- and NOT a "Ratte Shaque" -- in your area, you
are liable to have to order it.

Look on GC's web site (I can't remember the URL) under
Chemicals.

More than likely, a mere restringing of the dial cord
will solve this.  The old cord may be shot anyway. 
Realize, it is probably 50 years old.

When you restring it, pay particular attention to the
direction in which the cords wrap around the spindles.
Draw a map before you remove the old one.  If you get
it wrapped around the spindle BACKWARDS, the knob will
turn in the opposite direction from the dial.  That is
not correct.  If the dial movces clockwise the knob
should move in the same direction of rotation.

I once got hold of a Lafayette HE-30 that someone had
restrung the cord backwards like this. the funny part
was that the bandspread knob and dial pointer appeared
to move in the proper directions, but the bandspread
tuning cap was CLOSING as the indicated frequency
increased.

Some mistakes like this are part of the learning
curve.
But try not to make them.
