I agree!  And while it requires that I admit to belonging to the
ultimate idiot club, loosening that rear bearing screw a quarter turn or
so and then re-tightening it has fixed more than one variable capacitor
that developed a case of warbly picofarads.  Sometimes it's the bearing,
more often its the wipers along the shaft that have developed
intermittent contact with the rotor.
