Well for a fact that the new Extra regs were adopted in 1968 and I got mine 
at that time. I was licensed in 1958 but sometime between 1974 and 1977 I 
was able to get a 1X2 call and specify what I wanted if it was available. I 
choose K9SM as it is my initials and the availablity depending upon the 
when u got your Extra. W9SM was a club and N9SM was eventually issued to 
another person with the those initials. I know it was at that time as had 
just gotten married and not moved to another town. I can still remember 
getting the license from my PO box and I did not have it after 11/1977 as I 
had moved. I thing there was a 3 or 4 stage time period and those who 
wanted a special call were given it by seniority and I was lucky.  There 
was no extra charge for the call request
