Ken,
I can offer a minor correction. The Advanced Class license was
available in the 1930's. It was dropped when operations resumed after
WWII but holders of the Advanced Class License could continue to renew
it. I know this because that is what my father, W8CPW/W9RDW did. I
believe he got his Advanced in 1937. The Extra Class was a sore point
with him; he never passed the code test. He was actually good for
something over 40 WPM; it was an issue of legibility of the copy.
