Bill,

No no. You are going about it all wrong. You have to extract the innards 
and replace them with a new resistor that's the right value, then 
re-install the leads. Then you have a new part in side the old cae and it 
looks original!

(Apologies to those folks who extract and replace the innards of tubular 
caps in an extreme effort to keep the original appearance of old radios.  I 
must admit, if I had a Zenith Stratosphere, I might do the same.)
