"Any thoughts on the feasibility of stealing power from the socket on the
back my S40 . . . . . ."

Brent -

I did that in 1957 with my AR-3 and a one-tube 80/40 rig that ran 2.5 watts
input. Worked 13 states and Canada in my six months as a novice. Getting
the filament voltage right on the 6AG7 required a series pilot lamp with a
resistor in parallel as the AR-3 filaments were 12 volts. No, I didn't burn
out the power transformer, although it did run a bit hot!

I used an adjustable Potter & Brumfield relay to switch the antenna and mute
the AR-3, using the break-in circuit in the handbook. I had smooth,
clickless, thumpless QSK and adjustable monitor level to boot. I had so
much fun with this setup I built the handbook keyer - the one using two
12AU7s in a blocking oscillator circuit - and the keyer was as big as the
transmitter.

I still have the AR-3 and I am going to reconstruct the 6AG7 rig. This time
I will give it its own power transformer so I can use the Q-multiplier.
