[Hallicrafters] Seeking oscilloscope

Ken,

I'd suggest the Tektonix 22** series scopes. The 2213 and 2215 are small and very
easy to work on. They run anywhere from $100 to around $300. These later two are
60MHz bandwidth scope and great for HF radio work.

I used to have a 2213 many years back. I did sell it as I aquired a Tek 485
300MHz bandwidth scope. I dread the day my 485 has problems because it is not the
easiest scope to get into and check things out. So far that scope has been good
to me though.

Well, I guess I'm not as afraid of eBAY as most. Yes I have had one rather bad
experience, but that is in over six years of buying and selling there, mostly
buying I might add. I had a good friend who bought a 2215 scope about six months
ago on the Bay. He got it from one of the bigger sellers who had very good
feedback. When he got the scope the horizontal trace was only hitting about 50%
of the display width. He writes to the seller and they send another complete 2215
NO CHARGE! Funny thing is the second scope had the same problem. Turned out the
scopes had been modified for a special purpose. Once he found the change, which
was a simple circuit change he was able to get both scopes running AOK. So some
eBay stories do have happy endings.

Anyhoot, I don't think you can go wrong with the 2200 series Tek scopes.
Performance to cost ratio is great. I've kept away from Vacuum tubes in most of
my test equipment. I figure I'd rather keep "my tubes" in all the radios I work
on and just trust the perfomance of the solid-state test equipment, especially if
calibration accuracy needs to be maintained.

Good luck. A good scope is a most welcome instrument in any radio lab.
