Without getting into any technical arguments, and purist sentiment aside, 
there is little lost in using an 8 ohm speaker across a 4 ohm output 
impedence.  The other way around might cause some problems under full-load 
conditions though.

If you are REALLY worried about the correct load, put an 8 ohm resistor 
across your 8 ohm speaker and go to sleep happy knowing you have attached a 
4 ohm load.
