You are correct. The tone control was removed and the phone jack moved from
the rear to the front on the Mark 2.
On my units, the speaker is in the top on both.
Note that the dial glass calibration marks on the right side are slightly
different from the Mark 1 to the Mark 2.

Subject: [Hallicrafters] S-107 Alignment and Mark 1/2 Differences
I am in the process of aligning my S-107 Mark 2 (now that I have
replaced the missing 3rd. IF can ... thanks Gary!) and am slightly
confused by a reference in the Alignment Instructions for the
Mark 2 to setting the Tone control to High.
There is no Tone control on my Mark 2.
The S-107 picture in Chuck Dachis' book shows a Tone switch in
the position where the Phones jack is on my Mark 2. Perhaps that picture
is of a Mark 1? (Also, curiously, his S-107 picture shows no
evidence of the speaker grille holes on the top of the receiver:
where was the speaker mounted?)
It's odd that this difference would not be observed in the Mark
2 alignment instructions.
Can anyone here confirm that the Tone control on the Mark 1 was
replaced by a Phones socket on the Mark 2?
Thanks!
Julian
