Yes, medical hemostats are the ticket, alright.  They come in lots of sizes, and the small ones are perfect.  If you have a dial-string that's intact, but slipping... find some violin-resin.  It comes in a block at music shops and doesn't cost much at all... that'll make that sucker pull like a Belgian horse.

Before I found actual dial-cord, I used the older type of braided fishing line.  I also procured a roll of lead-center fly-fishing line.  amazing but true... it works really well, and retains it shape - doesn't flatten out after a while, either.... now, where did that little spring fly off to, anyway?
