Glen,

Just for grins, tune the radio to say... 1430 kc (as an example) on the BC band... then with another receiver, listen around 1885 kc (another example).... do you hear the oscillator?  It's "quick n' dirty", but a good way to find out if that stage is even working.

Also... turn off all power, and "exercise" all of the rotary controls... Remember years ago, when our Mother's screamed at us to "Not turn the channel so fast - you'll break the TV", then we found out that's how you CLEAN 'EM... Sameo-sameo on old radios.  Rapid "ratcheting" of the bandswitch et. al., along with some nice DeOxit, works really well.
