[Hallicrafters] Strange S-38

I just picked up my first two S-38's at the same time. One was an S-38 
the other an S-38E. 

The S-38 has a different tube layout then the one pictured at the S-38 
Guys web site. 

Like a S-38 it has six tubes and a shield on the CW Pitch control. 
Unlike an S-38 the tube layout is different. The chassis is stamped 70-
E867. The serial number is AB-198460. Under the serial number the 
number 31A430 is printed. 

Does someone have a story and schmatic for this one?
