Mike, your guess is right on. It is almost identical to the SX-100, with the exceptions you mentioned. I restored one last year and hardly had to look at the schematic, since I am very familiar with the SX-100. Actually, I think the bottom front plate is the same die as the SX-100. You might notice, on some of the SX-96's, that they have plugs in the spots where controls were for the SX-100's.
