About the same young age I had a vertical on the roof & one evening was
cleaning up the radio/work room with my brother. After a while of listening
to an annoying, snapping sound every few seconds, which I first thought was
my brother snapping his fingers just to aggravate me, I traced the sound to
the coax from the vertical which I'd laid on the floor while moving some
radios around. The one end of the UHF connecter was arcing over like a big
spark plug gap. With hair standing on end (fright, not static) I proceded
to disconnect the cable where it entered the house & tossed the end out
into to yard. Fortunately, nothing more exciting ensued.
