Back in the 1950s, the days of the TV antenna, my parents had a monster
antenna complete with crank up tower and an Alliance Tenna rotor. The
Hallicrafters TV chassis had been taken to the shop for repair and the 300
ohm in-lead was lying on the floor. We were in the middle of a blizzard
with the heavy snow being blown by the antenna at about 40 to 50 mph. We
sat in the living room and heard this snap sound every few minutes. Turned
out to be a spark visible between the spade lugs on the twinlead.

That was a little over 50 years ago but I remember the sight of the spark in
the dark corner behind the TV cabinet. It might have been then and there
that I decided this here radio stuff was mighty powerful. Since then I got
my electrical engineering degree and acquired the disease of collecting and
restoring radios. I have a bad dose with around 278 now.

Moral to the story: Don't look for sparks from an antenna, it will warp you
for life.

Cheers from Minnesota,

Gerry
