In going thru old CQ's I found an excellent article on pages 30-32 of the
April 1965 CQ.

Seems to follow the basic design of the P&H
VFOmatic which are quite rare. Its fairly simple with three tubes and a set
of crystals to match the transmitter. The author says its fairly simple to
match most other transmitter/receiver combinations, too.

The VFOmatic spurred Art Collins to produce the KWM1 and Bill Halligan to
design the FPM-200. Uses injection very common in the Drake 4 Line.

No modification of either receiver or transmitter is required as the author
uses plug in tube adapters that many of us use to check voltages with the
tube still plugged in.

Happy reading.
