[Hallicrafters] Info on S-72 and S-72 L

Hi all,

I just acquired an S-72 and noticed it was different from another I had
seen. The difference seems to be a bandspread capacitor on the top of the
chassis. I think I have an S-72, while the ones with the extra variable cap
are S-72Ls.

1) Does anyone know if there is a significant performance difference between
the S-72 and the S-72L? I am thinking that the S-72 has a simple gear
reduction for the bandspread insead of a variable cap. I was hoping it
still would be a decent SW receiver. But then why would Hallicrafters have
had the bandspread capacitor on the S-72L?

2) It seems an extra switch pole was added to the BFO circuit switch. I
wonder in the restoration whether it would be advisable to make this change
in my S-72. But without a narrow filter it is probably a moot point.

3) The S-72L has a gap in its coverage while the S-72 does not. I just
wonder why.

4) Mine has a BFO switch on the front panel. Many do not. Does this mean
that these models don't have the BFO stage?

5) I bought this as an inexpensive alternative to purchasing a Zenith
TransOceanic. I think this radio has some advantages to the ZTO. Anyone
care to comment?
