My S40 howerver uses a #80 rectifier...

Brent... I've been looking at the different schematics, too. I have an
S-40A, and it happens to have an 80 rectifier like the S-40, and not the 5Y3. I
also noticed in my S-40A that someone had tried to fix the BFO (new parts),
but it wasn't working very well. That's when I discovered that the BFO was
wired like the S-40. I rewired the circuit as shown in the S-40A schematic
and wow, what a difference.
At first I thought that my S-40A really wasn't, but the other changes are
all there. Mounting of the audio transformer under the chassis; minor changes
around the 6H6, cathode resistor change at V4; some fixed coupling caps in
the VFO replacing variables, etc.
I've been able to find all the schematics including the S-40 on Bama.

Joe
