Brent...  I've been looking at the different schematics, too.  I  have an 
S-40A, and it happens to have an 80 rectifier like the S-40, and not the  5Y3.  I 
also noticed in my S-40A that someone had tried to fix the BFO  (new parts), 
but it wasn't working very well.  That's when I discovered  that the BFO was 
wired like the S-40.  I rewired the circuit as shown  in the S-40A schematic 
and wow, what a difference.
 
At first I thought that my S-40A really wasn't, but the other changes are  
all there.  Mounting of the audio transformer under the chassis; minor  changes 
around the 6H6, cathode resistor change at V4; some fixed coupling caps  in 
the VFO replacing variables, etc.
 
I've been able to find all the schematics including the S-40 on Bama.
