Thanks Ken.  Keep in mind that all things look better in web pictures
than in person, much better.  I cleaned the whole thing with a soft
brush and Simple Green followed by a hot water rinse.  Meant to do a
final rinse with distilled water, forgot.  I used small wire brushes
on a dremel followed by Wenol polish.  No wire brush on aluminum
though.  The deck has oxide pits that remain, but they are shiny pits
now.
Ideally the whole thing would be dismantled, including tube sockets,
and polished smooth.  This would cost me my marriage and, after some
thought, I have decided against it.  ;-)
