I solved my own problem. After reading tons of listings on the Hallicrafters reflector, there were many, many comments about "black beauties" (plastic encased paper capacitors) and how they are prone to failure. Well, even though they checked out OK, I replaced the two 0.1 mfd paper capacitors in the modulator circuit and "voila" I was able to get pretty good unwanted sideband suppression. I didn't like the idea of "splitting the difference" on the adjustments between the two sidebands (as recommended in the owners manual), so I favored adjusting for real good suppression of the upper sideband in the LSB position and let the lower sideband suppression in the USB position fall where it may.....since I plan on working 80 and 40 meters almost exclusively. The old boat anchor will be on the air shortly. Thanks. Joe W8DCQ
