Hi Paul,

Most the early Hallicrafters receivers had a black wrinkle finish. The 
texture of the wrinkle varies somewhat over the years but it was definately black.

The original S-38 was a smooth  dark gray "gunmetal" color. There were a few 
S-38s that were painted black wrinkle. The S-38As were all the smooth dark 
gray and the S-38Bs went back to a fine black wrinkle. That same finish was also 
used on the SR-75. The C, D and E models were gray hammertone, but the D and E 
models were also produced in Blonde and Mahagony finishes.
