A couple of points about the PL-172/8295. There are actually two different
tubes. The original PL-172/8295 which is metal with glass seals and the
8295A which is metal with ceramic seals.
The originals (PL-172) is noted for getting gassy, particularly with out
being used. They are still available from a number of sources although they
may not be in stock all the time. RF Parts did carry them with a gurantee,
but they were as much or more than the amps usually sell for. The 8295As
run about double the price of a PL-172/8295.
As for general price and availability there appear to be quite a few PL-172s
around. They may or may not be gassy. Prices vary widely, but I've not
seen any recently for less than several hundred dollars and they run as
high, or higher than $1200 at some of the catalog supply places. I looked
at a guranteed 8295A for $2400.
If you find them for less than $300 or $400, go for it and hope for the
best. You might want to plug it in and just let the filament cook for a few
days. *Sometimes* they show up at swaps for less, but you never know what
you are getting.
BTW, I saw the same AMP, but $100 shipping stateside looks a bit steep, but
if it's well packed ...
