Something similar but just as true, making a phone call to New Mexico,
resulted in the operator telling me that I needed to dial the country code
first then the number.

long distance information at no charge once upon a time, but not any longer.

	
I called and asked the operator for the telephone number of "IBM in Atlanta,
Georgia".  Her response, "How do you spell it?" Absolutely true.
