I also use the SOFT toothbrush first with no detergent. What does not come
off with the water gets a second light scrubbing with a bit of mild
detergent in the water and a wash with clean water afterwards. I also use
Q-Tips.

Because of a bad experience I had cleaning an HX-50 panel, I NEVER immerse
anything to be preserved in water. On this particular piece (which was
badly stained with nicotine from a previous owner) cleaning with running
water and immersing the panel caused water to get into a minute crack in the
paint which was camouflaged under all that yellowy stuff. The paint lifted
and I was into a complete panel restoration (which I am still doing).

In short, be very careful when cleaning anything which you don't wish to
have to repaint.
