The DOB is still there Boomer, FCC data is not optional, but QRZ.COM is. Some do
not show the DOB, most do not show the County anymore, some do not show the
license number. My license number vanished and nobody can tell me why, as I did
not remove it from QRZ.COM

Those who want can get the information on 'any' of us with ease, it is
everywhere, all one has to do is look.

This is true enough, and has happened a lot. I seem to recall at one
point that QRZ or the FCC database was changed to stop showing DOB
(?), because of this very thing. I may be imagining it though, so
don't quote me. I've been involved with one estate that the club I was
in was involved with, another where the widow left everything in place
for 10+ years, ended up in a nursing home, and much of the gear ended
up going to a guy who claimed it would be used by his kid. It showed
up in ARC two months later with his phone number.

This happened with the estate of W1MMV. The vulture came in and
pressured the family members, saying that he had known Jerry for years
and wanted some of his old gear to remember him buy. He walked away
with an Atwater Kent mod 7 breadboard, stock BC-348 and several other
nice items, for peanuts. Some of it showed up at Hosstraders soon
afterwards. He left behind a whole lot more, though. Jerry was an old
radioman from the 20s and had a pretty big pile of stuff. The oldest
son was a ham and took Jerry's S-Line back to 6-Land along with tower
and some other items. They gave me some odds and ends, including what
appears to be a NOS Globe King cabinet that they were going to toss.
We did a complete cataloging of all items starting in August and held
an auction in early October. The auctioneer was certain it would be a
bust, but we ended up with around $10K when all was said and done.
Auctioneer just shook his head, couldn't believe how much they made.
Family wanted to pay me a percentage for the month+ of time. I
declined, of course. Having some of his old gear is payment enough.
WX1O and others were there, everyone seemed to have a pretty good
time. I worked with the auctioneer describing items and answering
questions.

The family was surprised, too. They are all pretty well-to-do, one son
works in the aero-space industry, can't recall what the other does -
real easte, maybe. They were pretty much just looking for someone to
clean out the house so they could sell it.

It was and will always be one of the most interesting times in my
life. I met some very nice folks at the auction, had some great times
going through the house and outbuildings with the family discovering
things. This guy had several NOS chrome Scott receivers in boxes over
his garage, among other things. I remember him telling me long ago
that I'd be amazed at what was burind behind his house. The local dump
told him he couldn't bring anymore there.

This is part of the fun of old time radio gear. It's been said
recently on some of these lists that in the next 50-100 years
virtually no one will care about this stuff, which is probably a lot
closer to the truth than we'd care to believe. It certainly puts the
issue of money more into perspective.
