This has been an interesting discussion. I agree E-Bay can seem maddening at
times but for me it has been a great resource. I live on an island and don't
get off very often so when I became interested in older radios, the internet
was key. I bought an HQ 129 for $75, an HQ140 for $55 and an R4C recently
with the noise blanker and 500hz cw filter for $350. All on E-bay.The R4C
wasn't a screamin' great deal but I really wanted an R4C, so it was well
worth it to me. I had to replace a 3 dollar tube in the '140 and buff the
knobs with my Dremel tool. It's clean as a whistle. Had to replace the
on-off switch in the '129 and 2 of the tubes were in the wrong places. Now I
admit I then went through both radios and replaced a lot of the caps and
installed newvpower cords but that's why I got them...to learn about them
and get my hands dirty. I've also seen an HQ140 cabinet (no chassis) go for
close to $150. I didn't bid on that. I guess my point is....if the price is
ridiculous, don't buy that one! If you take your time and aren't afraid of
something that isn't working 100%, there are some great finds on E-bay. Of
course you take a risk
of getting something with a blown power transformer or something equally
catostrophic, but hey, life is a gamble..
