I think I see Duane off in the wings with the boom held high thinking
maybe this is the time to lower it, so I'll be brief.
High online auction prices mean that at least two people out there agree
the item is worth that much or more. If the price is way out of line
the buyer might get a clue and bail out. Sometimes people don't
understand what they are bidding on and sometimes the seller
misrepresents the item, maybe inadvertently. I once put in a sizable
reserve bid in a real auction for a Halli S-10, sight unseen. I got it
for a song and good thing. When I picked it up it turned out to be a
derelict 5-10. I'm glad nobody else thought it was an S-10 and bid
accordingly!
I might get $500 for my S-38 with the really nice, new paint job and
very few 'extra' holes, or I might take a hammer to my SX-88. The
likelihood of either of those things happening is remote, but all things
are possible here in the land of the free and the home of the brave. It
is much more likely I'll hand over some serviceable gear to a newbie for
a song or maybe free. That's what its all about, folks. If you aren't
having fun you need a different hobby!
Cheers, Rich, KC9GQ
