Hi Olaf,
I had a bad crystal in my SX-111 and below is a posting from about a
year ago of how I fixed the problem. The crystal I used cost $10.
Good luck.

I must share my success with you. Earlier I asked for help on why
my calibration signal wasn't working on my SX-111. I got suggestions
on how to test the crystal (signal gen. and oscilloscope and look for
resonance), and after I obtained another 100 KHz crystal (in a HC-13/U
holder), I asked for help on how to mount it in a glass octal tube.
I placed a bad octal tube in very hot water and after a few minutes
I was able to twist the glass bulb from the base. Then I used a dremil
tool and cut the glass about 1/4 in. from the bottom of the bulb. I
connected the crystal holder between pins 3 and 7 and then glued the
glass over the crystal. Plugged in and now the calibration signal is
loud and strong and the appearance is great.
Thanks for all of the help, suggestions, and encouragement.
