Back in the mid 60's I was in College and we used the SX-117/HT-44 pair on
field day on 20 SSB. I gave the club my old Gonset 3 el Tri-bander which
worked like gangbusters on 20 (Yes Gonset was in the antenna business until
the early 60's). They worked great and we made well over 1000 QSOs on 20
SSB
with the beam at 35 feet on the banks of the Mississippi River.
The receiver worked very well as the transceiver inject for the transmitter.
What was different was the receiver tuned backwards. So you tuned clockwise
for the bottom of the band and counterclockwise for the top. The
transmitter was a phasing rig and the only problem we had was the carrier
kept creeping back in.
The ham wjo owned them was not pleased when Hallicrafters changed to the
SX-146. He tried the 146 and it was no where close to the receiver in the
SX-117. The New transmitter was a filter rig but back then the receiver was
the key. So he changed to the Drake 4 Line.
Go for the SX-117/HT-44 pair and if you find the Loudenboomer HT-45 amp go
for that too.
