[Hallicrafters] SX-117 and WARC Bands

Duane,
The SX-117 does a nice job on the WARC bands - and most other areas on the
HF spectrum. Info is in the manual on selecting the crystals - much like how
it is done with the R-4 series receivers from Drake. See pages 12 and 13 in
the SX-117 manual. The auxiliary crystal oscillator tube (V13, a 6EA8) was
not standard equipment so it must be added in order to run outside the ham
bands. Not a big deal, however, as you merely install the tube in the socket
right behind the little sub-chassis holding up to four range crystals. The
SX-117 will even go down to 85 kHz by using the HA-10 LF/MF Tuner (as
Hallicrafters called it).
The HT-44 is different, however. It was designed primarily as an 80-10 meter
transmitter. Although, there was a service bulletin that allowed the
transmitter to tune 3295 kHz for MARS service. There is a place for a slide
switch on the back panel of the HT-44 that is there just for switching in
the necessary extra fixed inductor and capacitor for that modification.
There is no other information on general coverage that I know about.
While it is off your topic, note that Hallicrafters also had a modification
for the HT-44 that allowed it to be crystal controlled for Novice use. That
modification also explained how to measure plate current to allow setting
the radio at 75 watts input - the Novice limit in those days.
73,

Subject: [Hallicrafters] SX-117 and WARC Bands
Please post replies to the list -
Will the SX-117 work on the WARC bands via the optional aux. xtal sockets?
What
about its mate the HT-44?
Thank you.
