Hope Everyone had a great Thanksgiving, Wednesday I received a
Halli S-47 as an early Xmas present (to myself...). Upon receipt
of the radio I realized it has been modified a great deal. The mods
are done very well but I have no idea what the original owner had
in mind. The tube sockets for the output tubes (6V6's) have been
removed and there's two large transformers in that space. One of the
transformers is for audio, I havent figured the other one out yet.
The antenna connections have been moved from the rear apron
to the backside of the RF head. All the tube id's on the chassis
look as though thay've been filed off, though its possible there
never were any such markings. The radio has been totally recapped
though I see one leaky black-beauty-type cap. The radio had no
tubes in it when I got it so Im not sure how to tube it yet. The original
owner left few clues, there are pencil marks identifying the alignment
points, and the name "Grossman" is written on the side panel.
All else is a mystery. Is anyone familiar with such a modification?
Was there an article as such in a QST somewhere sometime?
The radio is really nice and I feel it will probably work if I can
figure out the tube lineup. I have downloaded the Photofact on it
so I'll try to trace the mods that way as well. There's pictures of
it on Ebay, do a search under "Completed Auctions" searching
for "military shortwave" and you'll see the changes to the chassis.
Any enlightenment will be appreciated, I love a good mystery.
