Your Echophone EC-113 is well worth an effort to restore it to playing condition.
The hum you describe likely is the result of dried-out filter capacitors. That is a condition that is easily diagnosed and fixed by any reasonably competent repair technician. I don't know where you are located, but I'm betting there is at least one longtime radio-tv repair shop within driving distance that will have a tech who can clear up that hum.
The EC-113, while not a sophisticated communications receiver, is a pleasant radio for casual shortwave listening. With its handsome wooden cabinet and built-in speakers, it's a keeper -- especially with your nostalgic attachment to it.
Good luck in getting it to play again.
