[Hallicrafters] Overhauling SX-101 for a friend

BTW, the reason Hallicrafters welded the nuts back there is because no
one could reach into that dark, small area and the sheet metal was/is
too thin to tap with threads. In addition, I believe my broken, welded
nut was broken from an impact prior my receipt of the rig. After all,
the damn things are about 90lbs (HT-32). I also have a 101 I have yet
to get to. Good luck.

The HT-32, SX-101 and other radios use the same cabinet. The (4) screws
on the front of the cabinet that allow you to slide the radio out, can
be a problem. They were for me at least, and my HT-32.

Hallicrafters used welded nuts on the surrounding black frame. That is,
a sheet metal nut is welded to the black frame edges aligned with these
(4) panel screws. If these panel screws are bent, misaligned or rusted,
you may not be able to get the radio out of the case. My particular
incident involved a broken weld so the screw and nut just turned
together.

It is extremely difficult if not impossible to grab the nut from behind.
I resorted to using a Dremel to cut the head off the screw and damaged
the front panel in the process.

I then used the same Dremel tool, to cut the remaining (3) welded nuts
off. I then used those push on flat clip nuts that I believe are called
fender nuts to replace them. While this scenario is not likely in your
case (no pun intended), if it happens, you are in for a hard time. Just
be careful and slow. If you have any binding as you rotate the screws
out, stop and from behind, spray some penetrant on the screw ends and
come back another day. Let it soak.

Hi Y'all,

This morning a fairly nice, working, SX-101 was brought to me for a
"Cleaning of the controls and switches" and general checkout. A quick
check
while the owner was here showed it to be playing, but it seems the
sensitivity may be down some.

I've done some previous receivers for the owner and told him that if I
felt
it "needed it" I'd replace any paper capacitors etc. After he left I
pulled
it out of the cabinet and examined it. As expected it has a "gazillion"

BBODs and pink "Tiny Chiefs". So, I presume a complete re-cap job is in

order. I'd hate to return it to the owner only to have a BBOD fail and
let
the smoke out of some "unobtainium" parts 8^(

A couple questions.

1. The set, while in nice overall condition has a rather dirty backside
to
the dial glass and S meter glass. How hard is it to pull the front panel
for
cleaning? (manual doesn't seem to show that task).

2. Are there any unusual "Gotcha's in this set?
