I don't know what it is about tube checkers but they just seem to attract
mildew like magnets. Almost everyone I have purchased has had that distinctive
smell - the ones in wooden boxes are particularly prone.
The last one I bought I took out of the box and noticed that one capacitor
was particulary tasty to the mildew so it was the first replaced. I then bought
an aerosol can of mold/mildew killer ( Lysol?) and lightly sprayed the wiring
harness and a few other parts. I then put the unit outside in the sun on
several very hot days to cook.
Used the aerosol on the inside of the box also.
After about a week of the spray/cook routine, the odor is just about all gone
- certainly a lot more tolerable that when the unit first arrived.
