I think the MW performance of car radios went south during the transition to
synthesized tuning, memories, scanning etc. Prior to that there were many
good-performing solid state AM receivers - RF amps were the rule not the
exception. Years back, (in Australia) I had a Valiant with an unmodified
factory-installed radio. At that time I was part owner of a computer
processing bureau and frequently drove home after midnight - during the 60
mile trip it was easy to pick up New Zealand and south-east asian MW signals
with nothing more than the stock whip antenna, from the outskirts of
Brisbane. The only drawback to these radios was that they were prone to
overload in high signal locations. But so are the modern ones.
