[Hallicrafters] Re: An AM antenna

One thing that often is the case, the r.f. amplifier
stage of many general coverage receivers is "padded"
so that the gain in the AM broadcast band is not as
great as on the rest of the bands. This is because
the very strong, high powered stations, tend to
overload the receiver. As such, to prevent this from
happening, the manufacturer lowered the gain in the
540 KHz - 1700 KHz range.

You might look at the schematic and find the loading
resistor(s) and remove them. You may have to reduce
the r.f. gain control when listening to local stations
but then can increase it when looking for "DX".

Using a variety of shortwave antennas ranging from
dipoles with traps to long wires I get very little AM
reception, day or night, on any of my various
Hallicrafters boat anchors or modern SWL rigs.

Would my best bet be to try and work with one of my
old Hallicrafters or should I concentrate on one of
the modern SWL rigs.
