Doug,
As others have explained to you, the SX 100 was a top of the line at the
time (circa late 50's) receiver for Hallicrafters. It has 14 tubes to the 8 or
so in the SX 99. While you can get enjoyment from the 99, the enjoyment from
the 100 will last longer. The price can vary from around $200 to about $400.
Make sure the rcvr still has the built in Xtal calibrator and that someone did
not take it out. Also make sure it has all the original knobs as some are hard
to come by. When you get it replace the electrolytic caps ASAP to prevent
future problems. Later, as time permits and the need presents itself, you can
replace the paper caps (red devils and / or black beauties) and do a rf alignment
(easy to do with a signal gen.). If you are not experienced or have the right
equipment, do not mess with the IF alignment as it is tricky and you can lose
one of the sidebands if you are not careful. Been there / done that. Both
rcvrs are classics...enjoy. 73 Mike KF6KXG
