You can tune SSB with an SX-99. Just give it a good half hour (or so) after 
turning it on so that it can settle down & stop drifting. AM reception 
settles down (no retuning needed) after 15 minutes or so in my experience 
of the SX-99 I own. Haven't used mine in several years since getting an 
R390-A & never had the SX-100.
