The 27 MHz band (11 meters) was once an amateur radio band. It was given over to Citizen's Band operators in 1958. This created a huge upsurge in public interest in personal radio communications. Look at any electronics hobby magazine from the 1960's (like Popular Electronics) and you'll see many, many articles about both Citizen's Band AND amateur radio.

Though many hams bemoaned the popularity of "lowbrow" CB ("10-4 good buddy!") in the 60', 70's and into the 80's, it actually helped our ham fraternity grow -- at least for awhile -- by inspiring some radio devotees to "upgrade". (I believe some of these converts can be heard on 75-meter phone today).
