For the really tough jobs absolutely nothing cleans like a 50-50 mix of
ammonia and 409. I keep some mixed in a plastic sprayer bottle. This is a
very
aggressive solution and you must be careful how it is used. This is not
recommended for most simple cleaning jobs but rather when nothing else is
strong enough.
Try it on an inconspicuous area first to test surface or finish reaction. I
usually rinse the surface with water first to minimize applying full
strength
and rinse the cleaned part really well afterwards. Have you ever attempted
to
clean a very dirty crackle paint finish with ordinary detergents and
afterwards
it still looked half dirty? You won't have that problem with this stuff.
Repeat ... this method is not recommended for everything, only those jobs
where
nothing else worked and it needs to be clean. Don't get it on any lettering
or
silk-screen work and don't get it anywhere near the dials or dial glass that
has dial scales.

Bruce does not have Internet access and asked on air yesterday for help with
locating the pin outs for a UTC model cvm4 modulation transformer. Any
material
you may have on it would be appreciated. Please contact me and I will
forward it
to a Ham nearby his residence in Ohio to print out and give to him. Thank
you.

I have been using an effective product for cleaning band switches. It is
a PHILMORE PREP PEN, stock number 12-437. It is a bundle of fiber glass
strands, about 3/16 in. diameter, arranged in a pen holder so that the
strand bundle can be extended or retracted. One rubs the tip of the
bundle (dry) perpendicularly onto the metal to be cleaned, and after a
couple of swipes, it is clean. I follow that with a touch of Caig
ProGold and one has new metal. I got my pen at Texas Electronic Supply
here in Lubbock. I haven=92t checked to see if Philmore still makes them.=

I came across a product that MIGHT be good for removing tobacco odor. I
haven=92t tested it on a radio yet, so I am only mentioning it as a
possibility. It works well on my carpet. But, who knows, it might turn
radios purple. It is RESOLVE, which I bought in my supermarket cleaners
department.

I use a 50-50 mix of ammonia and generic "Windex-like" glass cleaner to
remove accumulated bug goo from my truck front end and windshield. In
summertime, my 50 mile round-trip commute can accumulate a lot of crud,
especially if my drive home is around dusk. Works better and is less
expensive than some commercial bug-removal products.

I do try to wipe off excess as soon as possible from the clearcoated
painted surfaces. Clearcoat on a newer vehicle is certainly quite
durable, but radio panels and cabinets will definitely require some
testing. This mix is a very aggressive solvent.

Ken & Group-
I've obtained a similar brush from Micro Mark Tools <www.micromark.com> .
Its very useful, but VERY abrasive. Careless use can remove more than just
the intended corrosion or tarnish. I sure wouldnt want to inhale the fine
fiberglass dust that it leaves behind.
They also offer similar tools with brass or steel brushes, abrasive cord
(like dental floss...) and miniature bottle brushes (1/16 to 5/16 inch
diameter).

After experimenting wtih everything under the sun and using some pretty
tough cleaning utensils to the detriment of the
switch contacts, I found that proxybrushes for the gum and teeth to be
excellent for this type of work. Won't harm the delicate contacts, just dab
with Deoxit and go.
They have small nylon bristles that don't come off and come in a couple of
different shapes.
They're found in every drug chain and supermaket.
Pretty cheap insurance.

Subject: [Hallicrafters] Hallicrafters] cleaning SX-100 front panel--BEWARE!

Thanks to the suggestions to the group, but beware and don't do what I just
did. I seem to have found a sure fire method for removing all the cross
hatching off of this panel and leave the printing intact. I used "Tuff
Stuff" auto and upholstery cleaner. This has been a faithful cleaner I have
used in the past with no ill effects encountered. And I might say also it's
been recommended by others on the list as a safe cleaner. My problem with
it, I guess, is leaving it on too long. I sprayed it on and let it set for
about 30 minutes. When I came back to inspect it, to my horror, part of the
cross hatching had dissolved. I ran water over the panel and wiped that off
and the majority of the rest of the cross hatching came off. The strange
part is that all of the cross hatching behind the large knobs was not
affected by the cleaner. This panel only had one small quarter inch long
scratch on it prior to my attempt at destroying it. So beware of leaving
any cleaner on too long as I did! Live and learn someone once said. Now
for the hard part. Finding another panel for this rig. So if by chance
anyone has one lying around they would part with, please let me know.
Thanks.............................Bob Raley kg5r

Subject: [Hallicrafters] SX-28A Oscillator Interference

I have a SX-28A that receives on all bands, but produces a high pitched
tone or oscillation every few mhz as it is tuned. Stronger stations
over-ride this. I've noticed the RF Gain contol and Antenna Tuning
control affect the noise just like it would if it were coming in from
the antenna. If I disconnect the antenna, the tone is still audible but
not nearly as high in intensity. I'm guessing it needs aliignment
because it looks like a previous owner has adjusted the slugs in many of
the coils and they seem positioned way far in to the coils in some
cases. I'm told the RF deck was recapped and the low value resistors
there are within spec.

I think this set must have been used pretty heavily because the main
tuning shaft wobbles just like a bearing in bad and I had to replace
both the toggle switches. The fly wheel wobbles too. Stilll, it sounds
pretty nice and is more sensitive than I thought it would be.

Has anyone got ideas what might be causing the oscillation noise? Maybe
parts placement or coupling?

Before really "digging" into the "innards", try
slightly loosening and then retightening EVERY screw,
machine screw, nut, bolt, that there is on the chassis
(of course not the alignment capacitors - old joke but
true - people used to bring in their radios to the
repair shop that I worked at in high school and said
that they "tightened the screws" and the radio quit
playing!). Actually, virtually every ground that is
made in the receiver is made through one of these.
Over the years they either come slightly loose, or
build up corrosion. By loosening slightly and then
retightening them, you again make good ground
connections.

Remember, every terminal strip that is on the chassis
usually has a ground connection. Also, many "boat
anchors" make grounds through the rings that are
around some of the tube sockets.

Also, make sure that the "can" on any chassis mounted
electrolytics that are supposed to go to ground are
actually getting to ground. Many of these were just
"twisted" in place and that works loose over the
years.

I have "fixed" many "strange" problems as well as
intermittents in all sorts of equipment by doing the
"screw" bit. The Heath SB-Line and HW-Line of
equipment are very bad about this as well.
